Kan Essentials Dry Derma Relief (Si Wu Xiao Feng Yin) is a ready-to-use liquid traditional Chinese herbal formula based on the classical prescription. It is traditionally used to nourish Blood and support dry, mildly inflamed skin affected by low-grade Wind-Heat irritation.

In veterinary practice, it is particularly useful in dogs with dry, flaky, mildly itchy skin where the coat and skin appear poorly nourished rather than excessively inflamed, moist or greasy.

This formula is commonly selected in animals with dry dandruff, poor coat quality, superficial scaling, mild recurrent pyoderma or incomplete hair regrowth, particularly where the skin appears dry, fragile or undernourished. It is often especially useful in older animals with chronic low-grade skin irritation and poor coat vitality.


In Australia, KAN herbal formulas can only be dispensed by a registered veterinarian.

How it Works

Si Wu Xiao Feng Yin is based on the classical formula Four Materials Eliminate Wind Decoction, which combines Blood tonification with gentle surface-regulating herbs.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, healthy Blood helps nourish and stabilise the skin and coat. When Blood becomes deficient, the skin may become dry, fragile and more vulnerable to superficial irritation, itch and inflammation.

Dogs appear particularly predisposed to Blood deficiency patterns affecting the skin. These animals often develop dry scaling, poor coat quality, mild recurrent itch and incomplete healing rather than severe moist inflammation.

This formula combines Blood-nourishing herbs with gentle surface-regulating herbs to support dry, irritated and poorly nourished skin.

In Western physiological terms, it supports cutaneous microcirculation and addresses low-grade inflammatory dryness rather than moist, exudative skin disease.

Unlike Damp-Heat formulas used for moist, red or exudative skin disease, this formula is most appropriate where the skin is dry, flaky and undernourished rather than intensely inflamed.

Clinically, this formula is commonly used in:

  • mild itch with dry, flaky coat
  • superficial pyoderma with dry collarettes
  • rough coat texture and poor hair regrowth
  • dandruff without moisture or odour
  • older animals with chronic dry skin irritation
  • animals that improve with fatty acid supplementation

Animals suited to this formula often show:

  • pale tongue
  • dry coat and scaling
  • low-grade itch without strong inflammatory Heat
  • absence of significant Damp

Think: Blood deficiency with superficial irritation affecting dry, poorly nourished skin.

This formula is generally less appropriate where:

  • lesions are moist, greasy or exudative
  • strong Damp-Heat predominates
  • severe acute inflammatory skin disease is present
  • the patient is intensely red, hot or inflamed.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Blood helps nourish and stabilise the skin, coat and superficial tissues.

When Blood becomes deficient, the skin may become dry, flaky, poorly resilient or more vulnerable to mild irritation and itch. The coat may appear dull, rough or slow to regrow following inflammation.

Dogs with Blood deficiency patterns often also improve with fatty acid supplementation in their diets.
What if my dog becomes itchier on this formula?

If a patient becomes significantly redder, hotter, itchier or more inflamed during treatment, this may indicate the formula is not appropriate for the current pattern.

Dry Derma Relief is designed for dry, mildly irritated and undernourished skin rather than active Damp-Heat inflammation. Dogs with moist, greasy, intensely inflamed or exudative skin disease may require a stronger Damp-Heat clearing approach instead.
