Quick River (Xiao Huo Luo Dan)

A classical formula traditionally used to warm the channels and invigorate Blood in chronic Cold-type musculoskeletal stasis.

Currently in Australia, KAN herbal blends are only allowed to be dispensed by a registered veterinarian.

As with all Traditional Chinese Herbal blends, KAN Herbs are best prescribed by an integrative veterinarian who can examine your animal in person. Telehealth consultations however can be used when access to an appropriate veterinarian is difficult or not possible.

If you are a registered Veterinarian, please get in touch via our contact page.

If you would like to access the KAN range of herbal blends, please book an appointment to access a telehealth (phone or video) appointment with Dr Tanya Meares BVSc.

Before the appointment, you will be asked to submit a form with background information about your animal and their health issues.

The cost of the 30 minute telehealth appointment is $80 but you will receive a discount of $40 on your first order of any Kan product (if any are suggested).

How it Works

Xiao Huo Luo Dan is a channel-focused formula used in chronic musculoskeletal conditions where Cold and Blood stasis predominate. It is selected when pain is fixed, circulation is impaired and movement is restricted by Cold obstruction.

Frankincense and Myrrh strongly invigorate Blood and move stasis within the channels. Turmeric supports circulation and reduces stagnation. Processed Sichuan aconite restores warmth to deeply lodged Cold, reactivating movement where circulation has slowed. Arisaema addresses Phlegm obstruction that develops in long-standing joint pathology.

In veterinary terms, this formula is chosen when chronic lameness reflects impaired peripheral circulation and cold-induced restriction rather than acute inflammatory Heat.

Consider this formula in:

  • Chronic lameness that is fixed and worse in cold conditions
  • Long-standing hip dysplasia where pain is deep and unchanging
  • Chronic intervertebral disc disease in cold, stiff animals
  • Musculoskeletal cases with poor distal circulation
  • Large breed dogs with long-term restriction and minimal acute inflammation

Look for:

  • Pain that is fixed rather than shifting
  • Cool extremities
  • Toned or tight pulse
  • Purplish or dusky tongue

Think: Cold-dominant Blood stasis in the channels.

This is a warming, strongly moving formula. It is not appropriate for hot or depleted animals.
