Harmonise the Qi (Xiao Chai Hu Tang)

POA
Size

A classical formula traditionally used to harmonise the Shao Yang pivot and regulate Qi movement where constraint and inflammatory dysregulation coexist.

Currently in Australia, KAN herbal blends are only allowed to be dispensed by a registered veterinarian.

As with all Traditional Chinese Herbal blends, KAN Herbs are best prescribed by an integrative veterinarian who can examine your animal in person. Telehealth consultations however can be used when access to an appropriate veterinarian is difficult or not possible.

If you are a registered Veterinarian, please get in touch via our contact page.

If you would like to access the KAN range of herbal blends, please book an appointment to access a telehealth (phone or video) appointment with Dr Tanya Meares BVSc.

Before the appointment, you will be asked to submit a form with background information about your animal and their health issues.

The cost of the 30 minute telehealth appointment is $80 but you will receive a discount of $40 on your first order of any Kan product (if any are suggested).

How it Works

Xiao Chai Hu Tang is a foundational harmonising formula used when regulatory function between Exterior and Interior becomes dysregulated. Rather than strongly tonifying or strongly dispersing, it restores proper ascent and descent of Qi.

In modern veterinary practice, this pattern frequently manifests as systemic inflammatory dysregulation layered over functional gut disturbance. The formula supports the Middle Burner — which in Western terms correlates closely with digestive transformation, microbiome stability and pancreatic regulatory function.

Bupleurum spreads constrained Liver Qi and assists restoration of peripheral circulation. Scutellaria clears constrained Heat without excessive cold damage. Pinellia and ginger regulate Stomach Qi and address Phlegm accumulation. Ginseng and jujube support underlying Qi so that harmonisation does not deplete the patient.

This formula is selected where inflammatory activity reflects dysregulation rather than fixed degeneration or heavy Damp obstruction.

Clinical Cues

Consider this formula in animals presenting with:

  • Immune-mediated disease where gut dysfunction appears contributory
  • Chronic inflammatory conditions without strong Damp discharge
  • Hepatic or pancreatic inflammation with constraint rather than collapse
  • GDV-prone dogs where functional dysregulation contributes to bloating tendency
  • Orthopaedic cases where systemic inflammatory tone overlays structural pathology

It is particularly useful when:

  • The Middle Burner is compromised, contributing to microbiome imbalance
  • Splenic and hepatic involvement suggest immune over-activation
  • Inflammation is active but not dominated by stasis or profound deficiency

Pulse may be wiry or tight.

Tongue may appear red at the edges or slightly darkened when circulation is constrained.

Think: Regulatory failure of the pivot contributing to systemic inflammatory instability.
