Lift the Qi (Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang)

POA
Size

A classical formula traditionally used to tonify Spleen Qi and raise sinking Yang in cases of Qi deficiency.

Currently in Australia, KAN herbal blends are only allowed to be dispensed by a registered veterinarian.

As with all Traditional Chinese Herbal blends, KAN Herbs are best prescribed by an integrative veterinarian who can examine your animal in person. Telehealth consultations however can be used when access to an appropriate veterinarian is difficult or not possible.

If you are a registered Veterinarian, please get in touch via our contact page.

If you would like to access the KAN range of herbal blends, please book an appointment to access a telehealth (phone or video) appointment with Dr Tanya Meares BVSc.

Before the appointment, you will be asked to submit a form with background information about your animal and their health issues.

The cost of the 30 minute telehealth appointment is $80 but you will receive a discount of $40 on your first order of any Kan product (if any are suggested).

How it Works

Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang is a foundational formula for Spleen Qi deficiency with sinking of clear Yang. It is selected when structural integrity and containment are compromised due to chronic deficiency.

In veterinary terms, the Chinese Spleen corresponds closely to digestive transformation and pancreatic-regulatory function. When Spleen Qi is weak, tissues lose tone and upward support fails.

Astragalus and ginseng strongly tonify Qi. Atractylodes and licorice strengthen the Middle Burner. Bupleurum and Cimicifuga raise clear Yang and restore upward movement. Dong quai nourishes Blood to prevent excessive dryness during tonification.

This formula is often used as a foundational “helper” in animals with chronic weakness affecting containment and tone.

Clinical Cues

Consider this formula in animals presenting with:

  • Hormonally responsive urinary incontinence

  • Rectal or uterine prolapse
  • Fecal urgency or reduced sphincter tone
  • Chronic constipation associated with weakness rather than dryness
  • Chronic nail bed infections where peripheral circulation is poor
  • Generalised weakness with loss of structural support

Look for:

  • Deep, weak or soft pulse
  • Pale to pale-lavender tongue
  • Fatigue or low stamina
  • Chronicity rather than acute onset

Think: Spleen Qi deficiency with sinking and loss of containment — where raising and tonifying are required.

Important Differentiation

Do not select this formula when:

  • Heat predominates
  • Damp accumulation is excessive
  • There is strong stagnation without deficiency
  • The patient is acutely inflamed

Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang is harmonising and lifting — not dispersing or clearing.
