Rehmannia Eight Combination (Ba Wei Di Huang Wan)

POA
Size

Ba Wei Di Huang Wan is a classical formula traditionally used in chronically cold, depleted animals showing weakness, fluid dysregulation and declining lower body function associated with Kidney deficiency.

In veterinary practice, it is most commonly used in ageing dogs and cats showing signs of long-standing Kidney depletion with secondary weakness and coldness. These animals often present with hind limb weakness, stiffness, tremors, urinary incontinence, polyuria/polydipsia, fatigue, hearing decline or cognitive dysfunction.

This formula is particularly suited to constitutionally cold or depleted animals rather than patients showing strong inflammatory Heat patterns.

Currently in Australia, KAN herbal blends are only allowed to be dispensed by a registered veterinarian.

As with all Traditional Chinese Herbal blends, KAN Herbs are best prescribed by an integrative veterinarian who can examine your animal in person. Telehealth consultations however can be used when access to an appropriate veterinarian is difficult or not possible.

If you are a registered Veterinarian, please get in touch via our contact page.

If you would like to access the KAN range of herbal blends, please book an appointment to access a telehealth (phone or video) appointment with Dr Tanya Meares BVSc.

Before the appointment, you will be asked to submit a form with background information about your animal and their health issues.

The cost of the 30 minute telehealth appointment is $80 but you will receive a discount of $40 on your first order of any product product in the shop.

These formulas require practitioner dispensing under current regulatory guidelines.

How it Works

Ba Wei Di Huang Wan is selected when chronic Kidney deficiency has progressed to involve weakness, coldness and impaired fluid regulation, particularly in ageing animals showing lower body decline.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, ageing animals commonly develop combined Qi and Yin deficiency over time. As this progresses, Yang may lose its ability to remain anchored, resulting in “Yang separation” — a pattern associated with fluid leakage, weakness, tremors, reduced vitality and declining neurological function.

Clinically, this formula is most commonly used in:

  • chronic renal insufficiency with polyuria and mild to moderate azotaemia
  • ageing cats and dogs with urinary incontinence
  • hind limb weakness or low back weakness
  • geriatric tremors, stiffness or ataxia
  • cognitive dysfunction associated with ageing
  • diabetes mellitus with underlying depletion
  • feline hyperthyroidism where depletion and weakness predominate rather than excess Heat
  • some chronic respiratory cases associated with weakness of Kidney Qi grasping function

Prepared Rehmannia nourishes Kidney Yin and Blood. Chinese yam and cornelian cherry stabilise Essence and support fluid integrity. Cinnamon bark and prepared Aconite warm and activate Kidney Yang, restoring functional warmth and support to the Lower Burner. The draining herbs regulate water metabolism and prevent excessive stagnation from rich tonifying herbs.

This formula is often useful in constitutionally cold, depleted animals and may pair well with formulas such as San Ren Tang where Damp accumulation or fluid dysregulation is more pronounced.

Animals suited to this formula often show:

  • deep, weak pulses

  • purplish or dusky tongue colour

  • cold sensitivity

  • chronicity rather than acute inflammatory disease

  • gradual loss of strength and vitality

Think: cold, depleted ageing animals with weakness, fluid dysregulation and declining lower body function.

This formula is generally less appropriate where:

  • strong Heat predominates

  • acute nephritis is present

  • Damp Heat is excessive

  • inflammatory agitation or hyperactivity predominate

In hotter or more Yin-deficient patients, formulas such as Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan may be more appropriate.
