Ba Wei Di Huang Wan builds upon the Yin-tonifying structure of Liu Wei Di Huang Wan by adding warming Kidney Yang herbs. It is selected when chronic Kidney Yin deficiency has progressed to involve diminished Yang function, resulting in impaired fluid regulation and lower body weakness.
In veterinary practice, this formula is most commonly used in chronic renal insufficiency, particularly in ageing cats and dogs showing polyuria, mild to moderate azotaemia, or urinary incontinence. It is also considered in feline hyperthyroidism where long-standing Yin depletion has progressed to involve functional exhaustion.
Prepared Rehmannia nourishes Kidney Yin and Blood. Chinese yam and cornelian cherry stabilise Essence and support fluid integrity. Cinnamon bark and prepared Aconite warm and activate Kidney Yang, restoring functional warmth to the Lower Burner. The draining herbs (Alisma, Poria, Moutan) regulate water metabolism and prevent excessive cloying.
In Western physiological terms, this formula addresses chronic dysregulation of renal perfusion and fluid handling in constitutionally depleted animals.
It is also considered in:
- Diabetes with underlying depletion
- Dry-type constipation in deficient patients
- Feline asthma where Kidney deficiency contributes to poor grasping of Qi
- Cognitive dysfunction associated with ageing
- Hind limb weakness, tremors, ataxia or low back weakness in geriatric animals
This formula is selected when deficiency is longstanding and involves both depletion and coldness.
Clinical Cues
Consider this formula in:
- Chronic renal failure with polyuria and mild to moderate azotaemia
- Ageing cats and dogs with urinary incontinence
- Feline hyperthyroidism with long-standing depletion
- Diabetic patients showing signs of exhaustion rather than excess
- Geriatric animals with low back weakness, hind limb weakness, tremors or ataxia
Look for:
- Deep, weak pulse
- Purplish or dusky tongue reflecting chronic circulatory insufficiency
- Cold sensitivity
- Chronicity rather than acute onset
- Gradual loss of strength and vitality
Think: Chronic Kidney deficiency involving both Yin and Yang, often with secondary circulatory stagnation.
