APR Nourishing Formula (Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan)

POA
Size

A classical formula traditionally used to nourish Kidney and Liver Yin while clearing Empty Heat in patterns of Yin deficiency with internal Heat.

Currently in Australia, KAN herbal blends are only allowed to be dispensed by a registered veterinarian.

As with all Traditional Chinese Herbal blends, KAN Herbs are best prescribed by an integrative veterinarian who can examine your animal in person. Telehealth consultations however can be used when access to an appropriate veterinarian is difficult or not possible.

If you are a registered Veterinarian, please get in touch via our contact page.

If you would like to access the KAN range of herbal blends, please book an appointment to access a telehealth (phone or video) appointment with Dr Tanya Meares BVSc.

Before the appointment, you will be asked to submit a form with background information about your animal and their health issues.

The cost of the 30 minute telehealth appointment is $80 but you will receive a discount of $40 on your first order of any Kan product (if any are suggested).

How it Works

Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan builds upon the Yin-tonifying foundation of the Rehmannia family of formulas but adds Phellodendron bark and Anemarrhena rhizome to more strongly clear Empty Heat.

Where Ba Wei Di Huang Wan supports both Yin and Yang in cold-deficient patients, Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan is selected when Yin depletion is accompanied by pronounced internal Heat.

Raw Rehmannia nourishes Kidney Yin and cools Blood. Cornelian cherry and Chinese yam stabilise Essence and support fluid integrity. The draining herbs regulate fluid metabolism and prevent cloying. Phellodendron and Anemarrhena enhance the cooling action, addressing Empty Fire and Lower Burner Heat.

In veterinary practice, this formula is most commonly used in cats with hypermetabolic Yin deficiency presentations.

Clinical Cues

Consider this formula in cats presenting with:

  • Chronic weight loss despite strong appetite and normal stools
  • Heat intolerance
  • Restlessness, particularly at night
  • Redness of eyes and gums
  • Hyperthyroidism with clear Heat signs
  • Chronic stomatitis or gingivitis with dryness
  • Diabetes in thin, heat-prone animals

Look for:

  • Red, small or dry tongue
  • Full or relatively superficial pulse
  • Thirst without marked Damp
  • Irritability layered over depletion

Think: Kidney and Liver Yin deficiency with Empty Fire.
