Cool the Blood (Qing Ying Tang)

Qing Ying Tang is a classical formula traditionally used to clear deep inflammatory Heat while protecting Yin and fluid integrity.

In veterinary practice, it is particularly useful in animals showing intense inflammatory or immune-mediated disease accompanied by Heat, agitation, tissue dryness or persistent inflammatory activation.

This formula is commonly selected in conditions where inflammation appears deep, destructive or difficult to fully resolve, particularly where intense Heat is beginning to damage fluids and tissues.

Currently in Australia, KAN herbal blends are only allowed to be dispensed by a registered veterinarian.

As with all Traditional Chinese Herbal blends, KAN Herbs are best prescribed by an integrative veterinarian who can examine your animal in person. Telehealth consultations however can be used when access to an appropriate veterinarian is difficult or not possible.

If you are a registered Veterinarian, please get in touch via our contact page.

If you would like to access the KAN range of herbal blends, please book an appointment to access a telehealth (phone or video) appointment with Dr Tanya Meares BVSc.

Before the appointment, you will be asked to submit a form with background information about your animal and their health issues.

The cost of the 30 minute telehealth appointment is $80 but you will receive a discount of $40 on your first order of any product product in the shop.

These formulas require practitioner dispensing under current regulatory guidelines.

How it Works

Qing Ying Tang is a classical formula developed to address inflammatory Heat that penetrates more deeply into the body and begins damaging fluids, tissues and Yin reserves.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, severe or persistent Heat may move beyond superficial inflammatory stages and begin affecting deeper tissue layers, circulation and fluid integrity. These patients often appear intensely inflamed, reactive or systemically unwell, with signs of tissue dryness developing alongside Heat.

Unlike Damp-Heat formulas used for moist, exudative or metabolically inflamed conditions, Qing Ying Tang is more appropriate where inflammatory Heat is deep, dry, intense or tissue-depleting.

Clinically, this formula is commonly used in:

  • persistent or recurrent inflammatory disease that fails to fully resolve
  • immune-mediated conditions with strong Heat signs
  • hemolytic anaemia or immune thrombocytopaenia where agitation and Heat predominate
  • masticatory myositis with marked inflammatory intensity
  • chronic skin disease with redness and dryness rather than moist discharge
  • waxing and waning inflammatory disease with underlying tissue depletion
  • inflammatory conditions associated with tissue dryness, irritability or “burning” inflammation

This formula combines strong Heat-clearing herbs with Yin- and fluid-protective herbs to help reduce inflammatory damage while supporting tissue integrity during recovery.

In Western physiological terms, this formula is often used where inflammatory disease appears excessive, persistent or immune dysregulated, particularly where tissue dryness and inflammatory damage coexist.

Animals suited to this formula often show:

  • red or crimson tongue
  • rapid pulse
  • agitation or irritability
  • tissue dryness alongside Heat
  • inflammation that feels deep rather than superficial

Think: deep inflammatory Heat damaging tissues and consuming fluids.

This formula is generally less appropriate where:

  • Damp predominates over Heat
  • lesions are moist, greasy or heavily exudative
  • the patient is cold, weak or Yang deficient
  • inflammation is superficial and mild rather than deep and intense.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Qing Ying Tang different from Damp-Heat formulas?

Both Qing Ying Tang patterns and Damp-Heat conditions can appear severe, ulcerated or highly inflamed.

Qing Ying Tang is generally used for deeper, more destructive inflammatory Heat affecting tissues and circulation, while Damp-Heat formulas are more commonly used for inflammatory conditions associated with heavy Damp accumulation, greasy discharge, moist inflammation or metabolic inflammatory patterns.

In skin disease cases requiring Qing Ying Tang, lesions may still ulcerate, crust or ooze due to severe tissue damage, however the inflammatory quality is often less “boggy,” greasy or odorous than classic Damp-Heat skin disease.

Can Qing Ying Tang be used alongside steroids or immune suppressive medication?

Yes. In integrative veterinary practice, Qing Ying Tang is commonly used alongside corticosteroids, cyclosporine and other immune-modulating therapies.

When is Qing Ying Tang less appropriate?

This formula is generally less appropriate where:

  • Damp predominates over Heat
  • lesions are greasy, boggy or heavily Damp
  • the patient is cold, weak or Yang deficient
  • inflammation is superficial and mild rather than deep and intense

In these cases, Damp-Heat clearing or more surface-focused formulas may be more appropriate.
