Integrative Veterinary Products Equine Cushing's Blend Stage 3 – Warming Yang Blend is a veterinarian-compounded powdered traditional Chinese herbal formula designed to support horses with advanced Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID or Equine Cushing's Disease) that have progressed beyond predominantly Yin deficiency into a more depleted Yang-deficient state.

As PPID advances, some horses transition from being hot, sweaty and heat intolerant to becoming cold, lethargic, weak and less able to maintain muscle mass and vitality. This formula focuses on gently warming and supporting Yang while continuing to nourish the body's underlying deficiencies, helping maintain comfort, strength and quality of life in appropriately selected horses.

Currently in Australia, certain traditional Chinese herbal blends are only allowed to be dispensed by a registered veterinarian.

As with all Traditional Chinese Herbal blends, the best results are likely to occur when prescribed by an integrative veterinarian who can examine your animal in person. Telehealth consultations however, can be used when access to an appropriate veterinarian is difficult or not possible.

The cost of the 15-30 minute telehealth appointment is $80 but you will receive a discount of $40 on your first order of any an herbal blend in the shop (if any are suggested).

These formulas require practitioner dispensing under current regulatory guidelines.

How it Works

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, some horses with advanced Equine Cushing's Disease (PPID) gradually progress beyond the earlier Yin- and Qi-deficient stages into a state where Kidney Yang becomes depleted.

At this stage, horses often lose the warmth, energy and metabolic drive needed to maintain normal body function. They may become cold, lethargic and increasingly frail, with poor muscle development, declining topline and reduced resilience. While some signs of Yin deficiency, such as thirst or mild sweating, may still be present, the predominant pattern has shifted towards Yang deficiency, where the body is no longer able to generate sufficient warmth and vitality.

This formula is designed to:

  • gently warm and support Kidney Yang
  • improve energy, vitality and metabolic function
  • support muscle maintenance and topline
  • promote healthy fluid metabolism
  • continue nourishing Yin and Blood to avoid excessive warming
  • support long-term comfort and quality of life in advanced PPID

Clinically, this formula is commonly used in horses showing:

  • advanced or long-standing PPID
  • coldness or seeking warmth
  • lethargy and reduced stamina
  • muscle wasting and loss of topline
  • poor recovery
  • reduced vitality
  • age-related weakness and frailty
  • horses that appear predominantly cold and depleted

This formula is generally less appropriate where:

  • the horse remains predominantly hot, sweaty and heat intolerant (Stage 1 is often a better fit)
  • significant fatigue has developed but Heat signs still predominate (Stage 2 is often more appropriate)
  • obesity, insulin dysregulation or laminitis remain the primary concern without evidence of Yang deficiency

Dosing

Minis 1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon once or twice daily

Horses 250-500kg 1/2 - 1 teaspoon once or twice daily

Horses 550-700kg 1-2 teaspoons once or twice daily

Dose may be halved as maintenance dose.

Why are there three different Equine Cushing's (PPID) blends?

Traditional Chinese Medicine recognises that PPID often changes as the disease progresses.

Many horses begin with signs of Heat and Yin deficiency, such as excessive sweating and heat intolerance. As the disease advances, some develop increasing fatigue and muscle loss before eventually becoming colder, weaker and more depleted.

The three blends are designed to match these different stages rather than using the same formula throughout the disease.
How do I know if my horse needs Stage 3 rather than Stage 2?

Stage 3 is generally considered when the horse has progressed beyond fatigue alone and now appears predominantly cold, frail or lacking vitality.

Common signs include reduced energy, loss of topline, muscle wasting, poor recovery and a preference for warmth. Many horses have also been living with PPID for several years before reaching this stage.
Can my horse move from one blend to another?

Yes. PPID is a progressive condition, so the most appropriate herbal formula may change over time.

Regular reassessment helps ensure the formula continues to match your horse's current pattern rather than the stage they were in when treatment first began.
Can this formula be used alongside conventional PPID medication?

Not all horses with PPID develop Yang deficiency.
