Four Marvels (Si Miao San)

Si Miao San is a classical formula traditionally used to clear Damp-Heat associated with inflammatory and metabolic excess patterns.

In veterinary practice, it is particularly useful in animals consuming high-carbohydrate, highly processed or calorie-dense diets who develop recurrent inflammatory conditions characterised by redness, moisture, irritation and Heat.

This formula is commonly selected in overweight, inflamed or metabolically dysregulated animals showing problems such as recurrent otitis, greasy or inflamed skin disease, licking behaviours, inflammatory arthritis, lower body Heat or inflammatory discharge.

Currently in Australia, KAN herbal blends are only allowed to be dispensed by a registered veterinarian.

As with all Traditional Chinese Herbal blends, KAN Herbs are best prescribed by an integrative veterinarian who can examine your animal in person. Telehealth consultations however can be used when access to an appropriate veterinarian is difficult or not possible.

If you are a registered Veterinarian, please get in touch via our contact page.

If you would like to access the KAN range of herbal blends, please book an appointment to access a telehealth (phone or video) appointment with Dr Tanya Meares BVSc.

Before the appointment, you will be asked to submit a form with background information about your animal and their health issues.

The cost of the 30 minute telehealth appointment is $80 but you will receive a discount of $40 on your first order of any product product in the shop.

These formulas require practitioner dispensing under current regulatory guidelines.

How it Works

Si Miao San is one of the most widely used formulas in veterinary Chinese medicine due to the high prevalence of Damp-Heat patterns associated with modern feeding practices.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Damp commonly develops when digestive transformation and fluid regulation become impaired. In modern veterinary practice, this is frequently associated with excessive carbohydrate intake, calorie excess, highly processed diets and chronic metabolic dysregulation.

Over time, retained Damp generates Heat, creating inflammatory conditions characterised by redness, swelling, moisture, discharge and reactive inflammation.

Clinically, this formula is commonly used in:

  • recurrent otitis with Heat and moisture
  • red, inflamed or greasy skin disease
  • inflammatory arthritis in overweight animals
  • interdigital inflammation or licking
  • lower body Heat with swelling or fluid retention
  • inflammatory conditions associated with obesity or hyperinsulinaemia
  • animals consuming high-starch or highly processed diets who develop chronic inflammatory disease

Phellodendron strongly clears Damp-Heat and inflammatory Heat from the Lower Burner. Cang Zhu dries Damp while supporting digestive transformation. Job’s tears assists fluid regulation and Damp drainage, while Achyranthes supports lower body circulation and guides inflammatory accumulation downward.

In Western physiological terms, this formula is commonly associated with inflammatory states linked to metabolic excess, hyperinsulinaemia and glycaemic dysregulation.

Animals suited to this formula often show:

  • red or moist tongue
  • Heat signs without marked dryness
  • Damp or overweight body condition
  • inflammatory discharge or moisture
  • rapid or slippery pulse

Think: inflammatory disease associated with metabolic excess, Damp accumulation and dietary overload.

This formula is generally less appropriate where:

  • deficiency and cold predominate
  • the patient is thin, dry or depleted
  • inflammatory disease occurs without Damp or metabolic excess
  • weakness and exhaustion are more prominent than Heat and inflammation

This formula is often particularly useful in animals consuming dry or canned processed diets where Damp-Heat and metabolic inflammation are significant drivers of disease.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Si Miao San different from tonic formulas?

Si Miao San is generally suited to animals showing excess inflammatory patterns associated with Heat, Damp accumulation and metabolic overload. These animals are often overweight, inflamed, moist, itchy or reactive.

Tonic formulas are more commonly used in thin, weak, cold or depleted animals lacking strength, resilience or functional warmth.

Why are processed diets associated with Damp-Heat patterns?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Spleen is responsible for digestion and fluid regulation, and broadly overlaps with digestive and pancreatic function as understood in Western medicine.

When digestion and fluid transformation become overloaded or inefficient, Damp may accumulate within the body. In veterinary practice, highly processed, high-carbohydrate or calorie-dense diets may contribute to inflammatory and metabolic dysregulation in susceptible animals.

Over time, this pattern may manifest as recurrent skin disease, otitis, inflammatory arthritis, obesity or Heat-related inflammatory conditions.

Why do some itchy or inflamed dogs seem worse on dry food?

Some animals appear prone to developing Damp-Heat patterns when fed highly processed or high-glycaemic diets. These dogs may develop recurrent otitis, greasy skin, licking behaviours, inflammatory discharge or ongoing inflammatory skin disease that fluctuates with diet and metabolic stress.

When is Si Miao San less appropriate?

This formula is generally less appropriate in:

  • thin, dry or depleted animals
  • cold or weak deficiency patterns
  • patients lacking Damp or inflammatory Heat
  • chronic disease dominated by exhaustion rather than inflammatory excess

In weaker or more deficient patients, strengthening formulas (tonics) may be more appropriate.

Can Si Miao San be used alongside steroids or anti-inflammatory medication?

In integrative veterinary practice, Si Miao San is commonly used alongside conventional medications such as corticosteroids, NSAIDs or other anti-inflammatory therapies where Damp-Heat and metabolic inflammation are contributing to the overall disease pattern.

As with any herbal or conventional therapy combination, veterinary supervision is recommended, particularly in animals with complex medical conditions or multiple medications.
