Six Gentle Pets (Liu Jun Zi Tang)

A classical formula traditionally used to strengthen Spleen and Lung Qi while transforming Phlegm in patterns of digestive weakness with Damp accumulation.

Currently in Australia, KAN herbal blends are only allowed to be dispensed by a registered veterinarian.

As with all Traditional Chinese Herbal blends, KAN Herbs are best prescribed by an integrative veterinarian who can examine your animal in person. Telehealth consultations however can be used when access to an appropriate veterinarian is difficult or not possible.

If you are a registered Veterinarian, please get in touch via our contact page.

If you would like to access the KAN range of herbal blends, please book an appointment to access a telehealth (phone or video) appointment with Dr Tanya Meares BVSc.

Before the appointment, you will be asked to submit a form with background information about your animal and their health issues.

The cost of the 30 minute telehealth appointment is $80 but you will receive a discount of $40 on your first order of any Kan product (if any are suggested).

How it Works

Liu Jun Zi Tang combines Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) with key herbs from Er Chen Tang to address Spleen and Stomach deficiency complicated by Phlegm accumulation.

Ginseng and Atractylodes strengthen Spleen Qi and improve transformation of food into usable energy. Poria supports fluid regulation and reduces Damp accumulation. Licorice harmonises and tonifies.

Pinellia and Tangerine peel transform Phlegm and regulate Stomach Qi, restoring downward movement and reducing nausea and distension.

This formula is selected when weakness and Damp coexist — particularly when Phlegm obstructs normal descent of Stomach Qi.

In Western physiological terms, this formula supports digestive motility, mucosal integrity and metabolic resilience in weakened animals.

It is frequently used following acute illness once the inflammatory phase has resolved but weakness and Phlegm remain.

Clinical Cues

Consider this formula in animals presenting with:

  • Digestive weakness with bloating or nausea
  • Motion sickness
  • Chemotherapy-associated gastrointestinal weakness
  • Hypoadrenocorticism with fatigue and poor digestive tone
  • Gastric ulceration or adenocarcinoma in constitutionally weak animals
  • Stress-associated digestive compromise
  • Cognitive dysfunction layered over general weakness

In horses:

  • Post-acute disease where Phlegm and Damp persist
  • Weak appetite with mucus accumulation

Look for:

  • Pale, wet tongue
  • Deep, weak pulse
  • Soft stools or intermittent mucus
  • Poor appetite or early satiety
  • Signs of Phlegm obstructing normal descent

Think: Spleen and Stomach Qi deficiency complicated by Damp and Phlegm.
