Three Seeds Combination (San Ren Tang)

Size

A classical formula traditionally used to regulate Damp accumulation and restore proper descent of Qi in early or moderate Damp-Heat patterns.

Currently in Australia, KAN herbal blends are only allowed to be dispensed by a registered veterinarian.

As with all Traditional Chinese Herbal blends, KAN Herbs are best prescribed by an integrative veterinarian who can examine your animal in person. Telehealth consultations however can be used when access to an appropriate veterinarian is difficult or not possible.

If you are a registered Veterinarian, please get in touch via our contact page.

If you would like to access the KAN range of herbal blends, please book an appointment to access a telehealth (phone or video) appointment with Dr Tanya Meares BVSc.

Before the appointment, you will be asked to submit a form with background information about your animal and their health issues.

The cost of the 30 minute telehealth appointment is $80 but you will receive a discount of $40 on your first order of any Kan product (if any are suggested).

How it Works

San Ren Tang was first described in the Systematic Differentiation of Warm Diseases and is designed to address Damp accumulation before strong Heat develops. It regulates the movement of fluids across the Upper, Middle and Lower Burners.

Apricot seed restores the descent of Lung and Large Intestine Qi, assisting cough, reverse sneeze and peristaltic regulation. Job’s tears drains Damp from the Lower Burner while supporting Spleen function. Cardamom transforms Damp in the Middle Burner.

Magnolia bark and Pinellia regulate abdominal distension and Phlegm accumulation. Talc, Lopatherum and Helwingia promote urination and clear mild Heat.

Compared with Si Miao San, San Ren Tang is less strongly insulin-sensitising and less cooling, but more effective at restoring coordinated descent and peristalsis. It is particularly useful in animals where Damp predominates but Heat is not yet intense.

Its mild flavour profile makes it especially suitable for cats.

Clinical Cues

Consider this formula in animals presenting with:

  • Reverse sneeze or nasopharyngeal irritation with Damp involvement
  • Colitis or gastritis with mucus but without marked Heat
  • Cystitis with Damp predominance
  • Renal insufficiency where fluid regulation is impaired (often layered with Rehmannia Eight Combination)
  • Conjunctival discharge associated with Damp
  • Lumbosacral disease where ataxia or weakness predominates over severe pain
  • Overflow bladder associated with Damp stagnation

Common presentation includes:

  • Greasy or heavy coat
  • Snoring or mild cough
  • Toned pulse
  • Lavender or swollen, wet tongue
  • Damp body condition

Think: Damp accumulation impairing coordinated descent of Qi and fluids, with mild or developing Heat.
